So that Happened
Today I had a mild bit of a breakdown. After an early morning of hockey with my oldest boy, we did our usual weekend shopping trip. This week is was particularly hard for me, wandering the aisles looking for things to eat. I’ve been eating a lot of healthier meals and honestly the cravings are getting better.
Today, though, the cravings were getting the better of me. I wanted so bad to just get something terrible for me, to scarf it down and enjoy myself. It really didn’t matter what it was, just something that I used to eat and enjoy without the pretense of having to give a damn about what it would do to me.
I’m not going to say that I caved, but I decided to test my limits. Not exactly the most rebel of foods, I went for a box of Mac & Cheese. Not really even a full box; I shared half of it with my wife. To make sure I didn’t completely kill my carb count, I opted against a glass of milk and had a diet soda with the meal.
Two hours later, I checked my sugar. It was through the roof. Bear in mind, the goal is to keep my post-meal sugars under 140. After lunch today, I was at 212. Oops. I could feel it for a bit afterward that my sugar was high, too. My head ached and so did my joints.
Thankfully I came down again before dinner (although still not under the 110 pre-meal target) and I fell even further after dinner. For whatever it’s worth, I figured out what a half a bowl of Mac & Cheese will do to my sugar!
